With the 17th pick in the draft the San Francisco 49rs select Bruce Campbell, OT, Maryland

San Francisco has multiple opportunities but goes with BAP, need and value. Campbell had an outstanding combine and will start immediately at RT with the possibility of moving to LT. They could also go for the safety position but addressing the offensive liine is more of a priority.

Star OT Campbell passes on Terps pro day (AP)

While 11 of his former University of Maryland teammates pressed to make an impression on NFL scouts, offensive tackle Bruce Campbell smiled for the television cameras and happily answered questions from reporters. Campbell had nothing left to prove after running the 40-yard dash in an impressive 4.85 seconds and bench-pressing 225 pounds 34 times last month in Indianapolis at the NFL combine.

With the 23rd Pick...

I was told at an early age that if you don’t toot your own horn, no one else will. So here I go. I read Don Banks’ first mock draft last week, and I was pleasantly surprised by his excellent choice for the Packers at #23. He went with Maryland junior offensive tackle, Bruce Campbell. Here’s my toot. I liked this pick a couple weeks before Banks did. Ha! …and most of you think I don’t know what I am talking about. That’s about the entire extent of likeness in our pick; mainly, that we agree it should be Campbell. Banks offers up legitimate football reasoning mostly that he is a hulking, man-beast. My rationale for this pick is purely selfish. I’ve never seen Campbell play, I don’t know if he’s ever going to be a great left tackle for the Packers, but I do know his selection by the Packers will make gamedays even more enjoyable. I know you’re thinking: not possible, gamedays are like beer, the only way they can get better is to have more of them, and the Packers won’t play 16 times a week. Well, hold on and let me explain. You see, whenever I hear the name Bruce Campbell, I can’t help but thinking about shopping smart, shopping S-Mart. (If that doesn’t ring the awesome-gong in your melon, go buy this and come back.)The fact is this could be your gameday:Campbell gets called for illegal hands to the face: “It got into my hand and it went bad, so I lopped it off at the wrist.”Campbell lines up across from Jared Allen: “Yo, she-bitch! Let’s go!”Campbell and Rodgers in the huddle:C: “34 Clatto Verata Nicto veer option”R: “Well, repeat them.C: “34 Clatto Verata Nicto veer option”R: “Again.”C: “I got it, I got it! I know your damn plays, alright?”Campell staring at the Bears’ defense: “Now I swear the next one of you primates even touches me…”Campbell recovers a fumble: “Got you, didn’t I? You little sucker.”Campbell pancakes a D-end and stands above him: “Hail to the king, baby.”Campbell shakes hands at the coin toss: “Name’s Ash. Housewares.”Colledge misses a block and James Campen screams at Campbell and Colledge:DC: “My bad.”BC: “Good. Bad. I’m the one with the guns.” {flexes both massive arms}Seriously, I could go on all day, but the point is having Campbell at left tackle would lead to your Sunday afternoon being filled with grooovy quotes like these. The question you must ask yourself is would you rather listen to Ash…or Joe Buck?I thought so. Give me some sugar, baby

Campbell throws hat into the ring; declares for draft

Teams in need of a solid blocker this off-season received good news earlier today. when Maryland offensive tackle Bruce Campbell made it known that he would be entering the 2010 draft.
“I feel I can be something special and this is best for me. I have good size and I can protect the quarterbacks’ blind side. [...]

Jarmon will undergo surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Barnes, Williams speak of Friedgen Redskins rookies Kevin Barnes and Edwin Williams gave their former coach, Maryland's embattled Ralph Friedgen, a vote of confidence in the locker room at Redskins Park today. Rick Maese has the details at Terrapins Insider.

Chris Turner is injured

From third and 19 from own his own 33, Maryland quarterback Chris Turner was hit on an inside rush and limped off the field with help with 4:33 left before halftime.

Turner headed into the Maryland locker room.

Backup quarterback Jamarr Robinson entered on Maryland's next possession and fumbled the first snap. The Terps recovered the fumble. But Robinson didn't attempt a pass on his first series, which ended with a blocked Maryland field goal.

For those fans who wanted to see Robinson, this is your chance. The question is whether Maryland coaches trust Robinson's passing enough to let him try to exploit N.C. State's porous defense.

N.C. State 24, Maryland 21, second quarter.
Terps turnovers: one

Bowens fumbled the ensuing punt, which was recovered by Tony Logan at the N.C. State 31.
Robinson fumbled his first snap from the shotgun but Maryland retained possession.
Turner limped into the tunnel with about three minutes remaining before halftime.

Torrey Smith does it again

With Maryland down 7-0, Torrey Smith took the ensuing kickoff 85 yards, setting up Maryland on the Wake 15. The Terps scored in five plays on a 1-yard Davin Meggett run to tie the game.

Smith is just having a wondrous season.

Relying on the run, Wake Forest drove 67 yards in five plays to take a 7-0 lead on its first possession.

Josh Adams took a handoff, bounced outside and took off down the sidelines, evading Demetrius Hartsfield to score from 48 yards out.

Other notes:

*Terps all in white tonight -- white jerseys and white pants. Demon Deacons in black pants and black jerseys. Wake Forest has won eight of its past nine games wearing all black, so the Terps are in a heap of trouble tonight (that was a joke).

*It was raining early here at cozy BB&T Field (cap. 31,500) but now it's merely cloudy, so the weather doesn't appear to be a factor.

*Meggett carried the Maryland flag onto the field, waving it at the red-clad Maryland section in the corner of the stands.

Maryland 7, Wake Forest 7, first quarter

Maryland Football Beats Yet Another Ranked Team

The Maryland Terrapins have been perfect at home this year. And they kept up their unlikely streak of beating ranked teams by beating University of North Carolina yesterday 17-15. So after beating 4 ranked teams this season; Clemson, Cal, and Wake Forest, they have managed to climb their way back into the BCS rankings themselves. They are ranked 25 in the BCS poll and 22 in the AP poll. Most important though, is that the Terps control their own destiny.

Those In-And-Out Maryland Terrapins

Suffice it to say that we know absolutely nothing about the Terps. One game, they can look like a balanced offense with a bend-but-don't-break defense. Other times, they look like they could easily be Clemson; full of talent and short on execution.

Penn State > Terps in Local High School Football Recruting

Unlike Texas, Florida and California, Maryland high school athletes just can't stand to be home. And while Terrapin football has always enjoyed a decent pipeline of players from Maryland, DC, Virginia and New Jersey, that has always been the program's curse as well; the nation's best football players aren't from those states.

So imagine that "damned if you do, damned if you don't" scenario being diminished by nearby Penn State, turning the small football factory that is the Free State into a Happy Valley satellite location.

It's not unusual that the Nittany Lions are snatching recruits out from under the Terps. Maryland doesn't have the history, facilities, or pro recognition that Penn State has. What is odd is that Maryland players aren't sold on the fact that Terp head coach Ralph Friedgen is a former NFL offensive coordinator, regularly puts offensive and defensive players in the NFL Draft, and is well connected in the pro ranks.

Or could it be that they aren't told this?

Either way, Maryland looks to be sinking fast in the recruiting quicksand. The best players in football states want to stay home, and the best players out of Maryland can't wait to escape.

Maryland linebacker Erin Henderson, a Butkus award semi-finalist, announced yesterday that he's throwing his hat into the ring of the NFL Draft.
