Tony Allen Undergoes Ankle Surgery

In what seems like a surprise, the Celtics announced that Tony Allen has had ankle surgery. They hadn't mentioned his being injured before that I know of. Pretty soon, he will have more surgeries than minutes played. From Green Street: The Boston Celtics announced today that guard Tony Allen underwent successful arthroscopic right ankle surgery and posterior tibial tendon repair today at the New England Baptist Hospital. Surgery was performed by Team Physician Dr. Brian McKeon and assisted by Dr. Mark Slovenkai and Jason Rand, PAC. Full recovery is expected with return by training camp this fall.[Discuss this topic on the Celtics Green Forums!]

Tony Allen target of threat

During Thursday night's blowout win over the Bulls, security was increased around both benches due to a death threat issued to Celtics guard Tony Allen. From ESPN.com: (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4094591)The Celtics and Bulls had extra security around their benches during Game 3 of the first-round playoff series to keep an eye on Allen. A source said the added security presence was a precautionary measure, according to the Globe.Allen, who is from Chicago, played nine minutes on Thursday night and did not score in the team's 107-86 win against the Bulls.Sources told the Globe that Allen has been receiving threats in Chicago for some time. Allen also was threatened prior to a March 17 game at Chicago. He didn't make that trip, however, because of a thumb injury."Is that what you're going to write about? Is that what you're going to write about?" Allen said when asked about the threats, then walked away, the Globe reported."It's a private team matter," Celtics president Rich Gotham told Yahoo! Sports. "It's just not something that we are going to talk about."Celtics coach Doc Rivers told the Globe: "It's a team matter. We will keep it in house."The NBA also declined comment to Yahoo! Sports. In April 2007, Allen was found not guilty of aggravated battery in a Chicago court. That charge was connected to a fight in August 2005 outside a Chicago restaurant.

205 Drop: Top 12 ways to improve the NBA Playoffs

Today's list over on 205 welcomes the return of the NBA playoffs, that 40-day crucible of entertainment where the expected happens, and yet demands viewing anyway. Beyond the snark on the site, I'm genuinely excited, if for no other reason than to see if anyone in the Association actually has the stones to stand up to the James Train. What normally happens in the NBA Playoffs is that the team with the best player wins, mostly because hoops at the highest level involves getting lifelong alpha dogs (which is to say, every player on an NBA roster) to subvert their ego and do the grunt work. That includes giving up your own stats to devote all of your energy to stop the other team's key offensive player, run through or set picks against the same guys you've been running into for the better part of a week, take charges and get on the ground for loose balls and all of the other things that don't show up in a box score. The way for the team with the lesser star to win is be less selfish about, well, everything. That also includes giving up your good reputation to thug it up (what, you think Bruce Bowen enjoys being hated?), if need be. But the problem with thugging James is similar to thugging Shaq in his prime; the man's just (much) more physical than the people trying to bring the wood. He's also been such a good teammate that when you try it, you better have teammates that have your back, because the Cleveland bigs are just waiting to prevent your crime. That's why the Cavs are the presumed champion; they just don't give you much of an opening to overcome their advantages. But they aren't the champion (yet), and if the Celtics can get healthy in the long and easy opening round, they could take four out of seven using the same system they did last year -- having stars (especially Paul Pierce, but also Kevin Garnett) that are willing to play as role players. When the Celtics had to take Game 7 last year against James, it wasn't with Tony Allen, Leon Powe or the departed James Posey taking the train on; it was Pierce. My guess is that he'll try to do it again. In the West, you get feel-good regular season stories like the Nuggets and Blazers against time-tested teams like the Spurs and Jazz, which should provide rooting interests for casual fans who are tired of the same-old same-old. It all seems like a sideshow to the Kobe Koronation, especially if the Lakers can work Andrew Bynum into effective minutes. There's also the possibility that a dark horse team (my favorite: the Hornets, though some people will get fooled into the eternal tease that is the Rockets) could go deeper than they should and make people forget that Kobe just has the horses this year. But that's what the NBA Playoffs are: a relentless grind that almost always winds up with the best player holding the trophy. You watch to confirm what you know... and part of what you know is that the best basketball in the world is worth watching, no matter how predictable the outcome.http://fivetooltool.blogspot.com - The Sports Blog That Loves You Back!

Celtics to Hawks Get it out of our House

The Celtic's defense showed up huge against the Atlanta Hawks who the C's have beat 3 times this year, but only by a total of 10 points; two of those games the C's won by only 1 point which gives Atlanta the feeling that they can beat the C's especially after last year's 1st round (taking the Celts to 7). But after last night's win, 104-92, having 10 blocks, the C's were sending a message: "get it out of our house". This big win helps the Celtics maintain the East's second best record, especially with Orlando blowing out Cleveland, and also shows the Atlanta Hawks how good the Celts can be even without Mr. Kevin Garnett. Pierce, Ray Ray, and Rondo were solid as usual with Pierce scoring 21 with 6 rebounds and 5 assists, and Rondo scoring 20 with 6 assists and 2 steals, nice!! Meanwhile Perkins dominated the glass with 10 rebounds and 7 blocks as well as Big Baby doing his thing again with 19 points, a steal, and a crazy block, amazing! (The kid gets better with every start.) Then the Celts' bench did what they needed to do, and it was great to see Tony Allen back out there.
Boston Celtics: It took overtime for the injury-depleted Boston Celtics but a strong overtime period led them to a 112-108 win over the Dwyane Wade-less Miami Heat. The win for the Celtics clinches the Atlantic Division title. The Celtics who are still without Kevin Garnett, Tony Allen and Brian Scalabrine were also without Ray Allen [...]

Comments from the Other Side - Bucks

I really liked the conspiracy theory that the Celtics gave this game away so that the Bucks would win because they want to face them in the playoffs. How else do you explain the Champs playing like a D-League team? Umm, let me think, L. Without Garnett we have a legit shot at these guys. Powe went off on the Grizz yesterday but he's not good enough to back that up Imo, particularly not against our outstanding defensive PF in Char.... Nevermind. CV normally bounces back after mailing one in so he's due a good game.Seriously though, contain Ray and Pierce to only solid nights and this is a W, let one or both go off and it's a L. What's the deal with Ridnour is that injury still affecting his shot? Being terrible at basketball might have more to do with it, really. I always look forward to seeing my favorite player play and still hold out hope that Ray will finish his career as a Buck. Don't expect the Celtics to show all their cards as they will probably be matched up with the Bucks in the playoffs. Umm, even if we do make the playoffs (not likely) why should the Celtics care about showing all their cards? They're way more talented and they're missing their best player. Eddie House's status for tomorrow is unknown. He missed practice today because of a family issue. Well if he's out, it's a win for sure. Rondo is playing. Garnett, Scalabrine, Big Baby, and Tony Allen are out. Scalabrine is out?? Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! He gives all of us hope that we can one day play in the NBA. 4 minutes in we're winning the turnover battle 4-1 but we're losing. Wow I sometimes wonder if Jim Chones is actually watching the game. Chones: "That shot looked good from Alexander until he let it go." Umm, what? Villanueva's killing the Bucks right now. LUKE KNOCKS THE BALL RIGHT IN OFF PIERCE FACE, PIERCE JUST ABOUT GOES INTO A COMA OVER IT AND CRIES NO FOUL? I WAS LAUGHIN MY ASS OFF, HECK IM STILL LAUGHING, COULDNT HAPPEN TO A NICER GUY. If we win this game it is because of RJ. I've never seen him play this hard in a Bucks uniform. Is it just me or has our D stepped up tonight? Doc Rivers complains that LRMAM is inside the arc on the offensive foul.Replay shows LRMAM is at least a foot outside the arc. Conclusion: The Celtics like to complain a lot. That was some of the worst clock management to end the half that I've ever seen and it didn't come from the Bucks! If he have Bogut this game would be already over These Celtics are so overrated They are missing KG too. Damn Perkins is murdering us. Had to laugh at Chones. Perkins is a physical specimin and angry 100% of the time Pierce just got a major star call. He put his head down and literally ran over Villanueva and no call. Horrible non-call. Man just how much do the refs want Boston to win this? A couple of disgraceful calls here Pierce just got another star call. Venezuela didn't even touch him. Looking at that replay, CV did NOT touch Pierce. **** refs doing their very best to help Stern's boys. Perkins with a career high How can a guy whose main attribute as a basketball player is looking constipated have 26 points? I would not be surprised if the Celtics are not throwing this game to the Bucks so they can face them in the first round and sweep them. I would not mind to see the worse best team make the 8th seed so I can sweep them IF I WAS THE CELTICS... Wouldn't you rather face the Bucks the the Bulls or some other team in the first round?Sure you would! Boston conceded this game....and fixed it so the Bucks could win!How do you beat the world champs shooting 32%????????????????????? THE CELTICS FIXED THIS... We are going to have to get the 7th seed to play Boston. Celtics will never get the first seed. Cavs are too strong and Celtics aren't as good as them. So how many of you are still sure that we will be swept in first round? We just win against elite team. Sure then played without Garnett but we played without Bogut. And this same Boston without Garnett won against Cavs few days ago. The Bucks could win a playoff game against any team in the East, but I don't think they could win a series. Chones sucks. I hate listening to him. I hate to say it but I'd almost rather the Celtics announcers. Scratch that... No I wouldn't The Celtics played absolutely terrible today. Our bench played the entire fourth quarter and we still won. I wouldn't say we played good defense, it was mostly the Celtics missing wide open shots. That won't happen again. Outstanding defensive effort. The Celtics shot poorly (especially Pierce, Allen and Rondo) and the Bucks forced them into a season high in turnovers. The Celtics won't want to face the Bucks in the playoffs now. Lucky win....means nothing.A team like the Bucks can shoot 32% and you can beat the World Champs!? That is absurd....obviously this game was not a priority to them. Why can't we play with this kind of defensive effort every game? We did play good defense today mixed with the Celtics missing shots they normally don't. Now the C's can take that bus trip south and take their frustrations out on the Bulls Tuesday.[Discuss this topic on the Celtics Green Forums!]

Allen MVP Of Day 2

One of the bigger questions heading into camp was how much Tony Allen would be able to give the Celtics this season. It's only been two days, but so far, the news is positive. From the Herald: (http://bostonherald.com/sports/basketball/celtics/view/2008_10_02_A_knee-jerk_reaction/srvc=celt&position=2)"I told Tony that today he was the MVP of this practice," coach Doc Rivers said yesterday. "Today he really allowed the offense to come to him."His confidence has always been up and down, but it's clearly getting better. He was scared last year after the surgery, and you can see now that he's got that explosiveness back."Now we need him to finish, but he's getting there."Let's not forget just how well Allen was playing before injuring the knee in the '06-'07 season. MyA belief is that if he can be about 75% of what he was then, then he will make us all forget about the loss of Big Game James. It's only two days into camp, but news like this is nothing to scoff at.

What Can Tony Allen Bring?

One key question I missed on my Countdown To Camp series was the state of Tony Allen on this team. With Posey gone, he's the guy everyone will look to for a defensive effort off the bench. Is his leg healed? Is his head right? Can he perform? Bulpett looks at this issue in an article in the Herald. (http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/basketball/celtics/view.bg?articleid=1122397 format=text)

What Rivers wants is for Allen to play his signature defense and be
a slasher to the hoop at the other end. He’d like to see him moving
more in straight lines than getting fancy. Rivers stopped a few feet
short of handing Allen the keys to the rotation, remaining more hopeful
than certain.

“He has a great opportunity, but again, he’s going to have to do
it,” Rivers said. “A lot of guys have had opportunities. I’m just happy
he’s not running around with the knee brace. Mentally I think he’s in a
great place. We’ll see, but he’s put in the time.”

Still Plenty to Play For

While it may seem like the Celtics don't have anything left to play for, a second look tells us that they have plenty to play for over their last 9 games. Several of these teams are possible first round matchups for the Celtics and they need to send the message that they are in control and not give any questions as to whether the Celtics can be beaten.
I expect Doc to give the bench, especially Tony Allen plenty of time to work on their games and chemistry as a unit over these last 9 games. Doc will want to try to rest the starters as much as possible so they will be fresh going into the playoffs, but he also doesn't want to give teams we may face a mental advantage going in either. Doc will have to walk a thin line to try to win the games along with trying to keep his starters fresh. It will be up to the bench to produce in the minutes they get as the players who produce down the stretch will be the ones given minutes in the playoffs.
See more on the individual matchups in the original article.

Experience Matters

The Pistons just schooled the Celtics on how to close out a tough game. After a solid first half, the Celtics tensed up in the 2nd half and let the Pistons take control of the game. Even at the end it took two somewhat lucky 3 pointers to tie up the game. Then Billups got Tony Allen to bite on a upfake and that was it. Game over, streak over.

Experience still matters, and this game was a perfect example. Pistons are the best in the East ...for now.

Have you seen video of the Tony Allen injury? It is available here.
