History of the Super Bowl Rushing Record

Over the next week and a half I'll be charting out the progressions of some of the Super Bowl Records. Why? Because we all want to learn. The Super Bowl Record was set and broken during each of the first three Super Bowls. First Jim Taylor rushed for 56 yards to lead the way in Super Bowl I. The next year Ben Wilson rushed for 62 yards to help the Packers take back to back titles in their Super Bowl II Victory. In Super Bowl III the Jets Matt Snell and the Colts Tom Matte became the first running backs to rush for over 100 yards but it was Snell who set the standard at 121. This record stood for 5 years until Larry Csonka rushed for 145 yards in the Dolphins Super Bowl VIII demolishion fo the Purple People Eaters. The People Eaters decided to give up even more yards the next year when Franco Harris rushed for 158 yards to lead the Steelers to their Super Bowl IX victory. This standard lasted 8 years until John Riggins rushed for 166 yards against the defenseless Dolphins in Super Bowl XVII. Riggins record last one calendar year as Marcus Allen rushed for 191 yards in the Raiders win in Super Bowl XVIII. Finally Timmy Smith of the Washington Redskins holds the current record as he is the only player in NFL history to rush for over 200 yards in a Super Bowl when he topped out at 204 in the Redskins Super Bowl XXII win.

History of the Super Bowl Rushing TD Record

Over the next week and a half I'll be charting out the progressions of some of the Super Bowl Records. Why? Because we all want to learn. The Super Bowl Rushing TD record is pretty simple. The record was set in Super Bowl I when Elijah Pitts had two touchdowns. This record lasted for 31 years. Along the way it was tied by Larry Csonka (VIII), Pete Banaszak (XI), Franco Harris (XIV), Marcus Allen (XVIII), Jim McMahon (XX), Timmy Smith (XXII), Tom Rathman (XXIV), Gerald Riggs (XXVI), and Emmitt Smith (XXVIII & XXX). The record was finally topped by Terrell Davis in the Broncos upset over the Packers in Super Bowl XXXII when he had three touchdowns and took home the MVP. If you're looking for a deciding factor in the Super Bowl than the rushing touchdown record is a goto predictor. Each time the record was either set or tied by a player, his team went on to hold up the Lombardi trophy.

Why I hate being a fan!

The Counselor is IN:

There are times I love being a fan. The start of the season, where every fan has hope that their team will achieve the top prize, is one of my favorite times. The thrill of a come back victory is always great. Nothing beats the high of your team winning the championship. These are the moments that you are giddy to wear all your team paraphernalia with pride.

Sometime being a fan of a team is tough. Being a fan of teams that are consistent losers is always difficult. It is also hard to be a fan of a team that is used to winning but has been losing for a while. It definitely is as bad when your team is expected to win and under performs during the season.

I fit into all of these categories. I am a fan of the Texas Rangers, Dallas Cowboys, and the Oakland Raiders (second favorite team- since the days of Marcus Allen). The Rangers have never been good. They have only made the playoffs twice and lost both time in the first round to the Yankees. The Raiders used to be great but have been perpetually bad over the last several years. My Cowboys were expected to be one of the best teams in the NFL this season but they have severely under preformed.

Last night I was wishing I was not a fan. The spastic Cowboys sent me through every emotion and back again. Every time I started to give up on my Cowboys, they had a good drive and I was given hope and it was dashed again. Over and over I would go from throwing my hat, to cheering, to throwing my hat again. I know my Cowboys hating friends loved this game. Last night?s game was the perfect microcosm of this year?s season. They have been giving me hope, dashing my hope, giving me more hope, and then dashing them again all season long.

After last night?s huge let down, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers decided to give the Cowboys a gift by losing today. The Cowboys are still in the playoffs if they win next week. Here we go again- more hope.

I'm really not enjoying being a fan right now. I am sure I will get over it. If nothing else, March will bring me hope that my Rangers can win it all this year. No, I am not smoking anything; I am just a fan, even when I hate being a fanatic.

The Counselor is OUT:

Everyone's feeling the effects of Brady's injury... even retired players

This video shows the first round of a fantasy draft that included a number of HOF football players, including Jerry Rice, Marcus Allen, Tim Brown, Michael Irvin and Ronnie Lott. In hindsight, maybe that Tom Brady fantasy selection wasn't so smart after all.

Darren McFadden's stock slipping?

Darren went #4 overall to the Raiders; however, in Ronnie Lott's recent fantasy football draft with All Stars Helping Kinds, Darren was on-hand to watch himself slip all the way to #26. Watch as he gets drafted by legendary Hall of Fame running back, Marcus Allen, and listen for what he has to say to all of those teams who passed him up.

Funniest man in the room: Michael Irvin

Michael Irvin wasn't the best football player in the room. He wasn't even the best at his position. But he absolutely stole the show when it came to making people laugh. Recently Yardbarker teamed up with Ronnie Lott and All Stars Helping Kids to throw a Hall of Fame fantasy football draft party. In addition to Irvin and Lott, the event played host to an additional dozen or so past or current stars, including Jerry Rice, Marcus Allen, Warren Moon, Tim Brown, Charles Haley, Brent Jones, Ted Hendricks and Tom Rathman, a former 49ers star who currently coaches Raiders RB Darren McFadden. McFadden attended along with teammate CB Nnamdi Asomugha.

Add this profile as a favorite and you'll be notified in your News Feed whenever we post new content from the event. We've got some interviews on stage, from the green room prior to the event, and also some footage of the draft itself. Each former player in attendance was on hand to help draft a fantasy football team. In case you're wondering, the first "reach" of the night belonged to... well, you'll just have to wait and see. Before the start of the NFL season, we'll release, along with more video, full team rosters drafted by the Hall of Famers.

In the meantime, check out this video of Michael Irvin making the most of his entrance.

Safety support

It is?a common trend in the NFL?for talented, but aging NFL veterans to change teams within their division.? Neil Smith went to Denver, Marcus Allen went to K.C., and now?Greg Wesley heads to Oakland.? Small joke;?there's no way I can compare the?Smith and Allen transfers to Wesley's arrival.??But there is one thing that should occur in a similar fashion.? Players often persuade themselves?into getting revenge on the teams that let'em go, and if they can't help their new team on the field, they know they can help them prepare?during the week.?
Wesley was disgruntled with his old team before the?2007 season started,?and after nearly a year of continued employment it comes with little surprise that?he's been?deciding between the Denver Broncos and the Oakland Raiders since being cut last week.? There is no way Wesley was going to make it on the starting roster in either Denver or Oakland for that matter,?and could've had a better shot at starting elsewhere, but decided otherwise.? Revenge???? I sure hope so.?

All Stars Helping Kids

I got invited to a sweet event in San Fran last Friday... the All Stars Helping Kids Fantasy Football Draft. It was a good time. I met a ton of cool people and my coach and I made a lot of great contacts. My buddy Trevor even drove all day from Vegas to South Lake Tahoe to San Fran to get in on some great food and a solid DJ. Jerry Rice, Ronnie Lott, Marcus Allen, Darren McFadden and a whole bunch of other former and current NFL ballers showed up... and the 49ers cheerleaders were there in full force. I want to thank all of the folks at All Stars Helping Kids, SC-Consult, and Yardbarker for putting on such a killer event and I'd like to thank my ski sponsor Atomic for donating a pair of skis and a snowboard to support the cause... clutch. So, keep your eyes out for future All Stars Helping Kids events and help support this great organization.

Yardbarker’s All-Star Celebrity Fantasy Football Draft Party

I got a great opportunity to attend a star studded charity event on Friday night. The All-Star Celebrity Fantasy Football Draft Party was thrown by Fox Sports and Yarbarker in San Francisco. Thanks goes to Diana over at Yardbarker for the hookup. The event was hosted by former 49er Ronnie Lott, and featured former ball players Tim Brown, Jerry Rice, Ted Hendricks, Marcus Allen, Warren Moon, Tom Rathman, and many others. There were a couple current Raiders, including one the newest, Darren McFadden.
My experience was definitely surreal at times. One minute I'm playing Nintendo Wii next to McFadden (the event had a couple Wii stations), and the next he's being hounded by guys with media passes who want to ask meaningless questions like about his relationship with JaMarcus Russell, and what it feels like to be a Raider. The man's been in the NFL for only two months, training camp hasn't even started yet. I would be surprised if he has any true feelings or thoughts on his first few months with the Raiders. Hell, I bet since mid-January he's been through hundreds of interviews, worked in the gym for hundreds of hours, been on a dozen plane flights, and has had to move his life 2,500 miles from home.
One of McFadden's first chances to organize his life has come during this stretch of off-time between the end of mini-camps and the start of training camp. Maybe he's now starting to reflect on the last 6 months, but I'm sure he'd rather just stick to business and put the interviews on hold for a minute. He had to sell himself to scouts, coaches, and fans for about four months straight; imagine all the interviews he had no choice but to do. I wonder how many times he's been asked the same questions, and how many times he had to just suck it up and answer (maybe with a little twist, but still the same answer). I frankly just wanted to play video games with the guy, shoot the shit, and not ask him how many carries he thinks he's gonna get this season.
After McFadden left to an adjoining room for more interviews I just wandered around looking for more Raiders. I talked to Ted Hendricks for a second mainly to see if he remembered playing high school ball against my father; he didn't. Overheard former Niner Keena Turner give this shout out to Yardbarker; "I don't know what they do, but whoever they (Yarbarker) are they're doing a great job". Turner, the interviewer, and all that could overhear started laughing. I talked to a couple other different players, but really wanted to keep to the mood of the laidback evening. In other words I really didn't ask anything worth posting on a blog, I actually think I might have talked about other sports more than football. But there was one guy that I knew I wanted to chat with. Check out my next article for the interview.

So Nature deals with us

As I mentioned in my bio, I grew up in the wake of the Colts' exodus from Baltimore and turned to the loving arms of the Washington Redskins.? I was guided there by my father, and together we cheered the Washington Redskins through three superbowl wins.? Football was a bond we shared and I always treasured watching games with him.?
On July 5th, Redskins Dad? ?my beloved father? passed away early in the morning.? He taught me how to be a proper football fan.? He taught me to appreciate sportsmanship and loyalty.? He taught me to hate those stankin Cowboys and Eagles and Giants, but to also have respect for your enemy.? He taught me to never give up and he taught me to have faith in my team.? He also taught me many new swear words when Marcus Allen ran for that touchdown in the Superbowl against the Raiders.? Many of my best memories of him revolve around football, and I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that football brought us closer together.
So I hope you will all indulge me and take a moment to pay some respect and appreciation to those that got you?interested in this wonderful game.? We may have different teams and different loyalties, but we share the same love of the game.? Let's remember that.
Thank you
Redskins Guy

Coming to California

Been a couple weeks since I blogged sorry for the delay. We wrap up our workouts this week and then head to California for the Rookie Symposium Sunday. All the coaches are gone so right now we're just lifting. We'll get a small break before training camp starts in late July. I do miss California and I'm looking forward to spending a few weeks at home. I'm also planning to attend a fantasy football event Ronnie Lott is hosting in San Francisco July 18. It's a charity event and they will have a bunch of legends there. Any time you can get in the same room with Ronnie and Marcus Allen and Joe Montana and Michael Irvin and Tim Brown and guys like that you're in a good spot. I'm excited about it.

I will fill you in from the rookie symposium

Play every down like it's your last

What's up everyone in the Yard. Just got back from Canton and wanted to share my trip with you.

All of the rookies in the NFL are required to go to the Hall of Fame to learn about the history of the game and our turn was Friday. I am so glad we did it - I loved the experience. The Hall of Fame represents the ultimate respect. Everyone thinks you're one of the best to ever play the position and to play the game. To see that select group was really cool. I called Coach Norton while I was in there and told him he belonged in here for all of his contributions. I hope that day comes.

I learned a lot while I was there. One thing I learned was USC has more players in the Hall of Fame than any other school. That's right!! When they told us that my eyes lit up! All those guys represent us and now we represent them. It was especially cool for me to see the guys in there that I've had the chance to meet - Ronnie Lott, Anthony Munoz, Marcus Allen.

Another thing I learned was that there are 13 or 14 guys in the Hall of Fame who were undrafted. That is really cool to hear for the guys who were undrafted. It really never matters where you start as long as you get the chance. It's what you do with the opportunity that matters. After the first year or two people will forget where you were drafted. I took as many pictures as I could and after I get them developed I will put one in my locker and one inside my dashboard to constantly motivate me and remind me to set and pursue my goals. I took pictures of the guys who have been inspiring to me guys like Jack Lambert, Ronnie Lott, Ray Nitschke, Mike Singletary, Sam Huff. These are the guys I love watching on NFL Network. I try to take a little of what they did and incorporate it into my game.

One of the true highlights for me was seeing Walter Payton in there. He is one of my all-time favorite players. I read his book when I was younger and even though he played a different position he immediately became one of my favorites. In the book he said he played every down like it was his last. I've tried to do the same thing ever since I read it.

Ronnie Lott - Hall of Famer on and off the field

I have been meaning to write about this for the last week, but just didn't find the time.

Pro Day was a once in a lifetime experience and I enjoyed the moment. I know that it did not end there so I am continuing with my workouts and I'm also catching up with some people I haven't seen for a little while. I know that I will be moving soon so I want to make sure I touch base with many of the folks who have helped me during my time at USC.

I was caught off guard at USC's spring practice last week. I went out to watch the linebackers and I was walking along the field and some guy grabs me and it was only Ronnie Lott. Ronnie Lott and Marcus Allen! I have met Ronnie before and he has said some things to me at games, but I have never really talked to him like that. He told me to really enjoy this time because it's once in a lifetime and will never come again. Marcus told me to just be myself at the next level. It was really cool for those guys to take the time to talk to me. It really meant a lot to me.

Here's a funny story that I am going to tell Ronnie the next time I see him. I was 7 or 8 and he was signing autographs in a store in Vacaville. My mom took me so that I could get his autograph on this 49ers book he was signing. I got a picture of him shaking his hand. I still have it. Here I am 15 years later and he's helping me get ready for the next stage in my life. It was really exciting for me. I am going to see him again in a couple weeks and I'm going to have him sign that photo. He invited me to come to his office and visit with him more about everything - getting ready for the NFL, and life off of the field. He is such a great role model on how to conduct yourself on and off the field. I want to pick his brain on what he has done and try to incorporate some of those things into what I do. Ronnie has earned so much respect by the way he played. He's a Hall of Famer, but seeing what he has accomplished off the as well takes the respect to another level. He's a caring and respectful person off the field and I want to follow those some guidelines.
