Robert Allenby is not a fan of the new groove rules

You want a look at what life is going to be like for Tour pros with the new, less forgiving grooves? Look no farther than two-time 2010 bridesmaid Robert Allenby, who's now in effect given away two tournaments by flying the green in a way that he might not have otherwise done with the old grooves.Sunday, Allenby sailed his shot well over the 14th hole and off the cliff that backs the green, as you can see in that photo above. At the time, he was just two strokes behind eventual tournament winner Ben Crane and sitting 162 yards out. As Steve Elling recounts, Allenby's caddy recommended a 6-iron, Allenby wanted an 8, and they compromised on a 7. One swing later, and the ball was en route to the Pacific."I think it's still going," Allenby laughed after the round. "It's going for a surf."It's the second time that a flown ball has gotten Allenby in trouble. A few weeks ago at the Sony, Allenby sailed another shot over the green, leaving himself with a long chance at up-and-down for a win. He couldn't do it, and Ryan Palmer walked away with the win.Allenby took a realistic view of the situation. "Obviously, two shots have cost me two tournaments," he said. "But at least they are costing me tournaments." The significance here is that Allenby is the first guy to start learning about just how tricky this new groove thang is going to be. At the moment, nobody really cares if Allenby flies the green. (Sorry, Robert.) But come Augusta or the Ryder Cup, when somebody who doesn't have the control of Allenby goes and sprays a ball into the grandstands, there'll be gripes aplenty. It'll be the equivalent of complaints when an NFL kicker shanks a gimme field goal to win a game.So the pros have two options -- complain, which Allenby to his credit has not done, or step up their game and adjust. Which way do you think they're going to run?

Questions will dog Allenby until he seals the deal again

By most standards, Robert Allenby has thrived on the PGA
Tour over the past eight years. His numbers are impressive during that span – over $16 million in earnings, five runner-up finishes and 48 top-10s.
Yet for all the success, there's something that's been missing since 2001
– a victory.
Allenby's troubles sealing the deal on the PGA Tour have not
affected his play abroad, however. Just last month he won two events, including
the Australian PGA, which makes seven victories abroad since his last victory on
tour.
Allenby's inability to close on the PGA Tour over the last
eight years defies explanation. The skills are still present and he's never had
the reputation of someone who couldn't handle the pressure. Yet, the fact
remains, until he closes out a PGA Tour event in style, the questions will
linger.
At 8-under, Allenby heads into the weekend in great shape.
He's near the top of the leader board, his game is in top shape and his track
record here would indicate that his early success this week is no fluke.
With Steve Stricker and Zach Johnson in Allenby's way, a win
this week will certainly be a challenge, but with big names near the lead, the
focus of the media might be elsewhere, which should take some pressure off
Allenby, and we all know that's a good thing in this sport.
Now, if he can just manage to look where he's walking this
weekend, he could start 2010 in style.

Robert Allenby shot a 7-under 65 on Thursday for a one-shot lead after the first round of the Dubai World Championship.

The 38-year-old Australian, who plays mainly on the U.S. PGA tour, had eight birdies and only one bogey on the Earth Course, which is hosting the $7.5 million final event of the European Tour season.

Allenby was one shot ahead of England's Lee Westwood, Chris Woods and Colombian Camilo Villegas, who all shot 6-under 66s.
